Route Summary

This is a delightful rural ramble in mixed countryside and woodland around and about the iconic Craigievar Castle, a popular and well-deserved visitor attraction. On a sheltered hillside, the natural environment is particularly favoured, and there are great views, near and far.

(076) Dinnet-Loch Kinord-Burn O’Vat Circular (Aberdeenshire)

Route Summary
A gently undulating walk in the pine and birch woods of the National Nature Reserve encircling Kinord Loch. Mid-way, the route diverts to the memorable gorge at Burn O’Vat. There are also interesting insights into the history of human habitation in the Dinnet area.

(075) Braemar-Creag Choinnich Circuit (Aberdeenshire)

Route Summary
An invigorating climb through mature pines to the summit of Creag Choinnich, overlooking Braemar, is rewarded by a fine array of mountain views. The route then drops lower to encircle the hill, while still offering some enchanting outlooks, particularly of the upper Dee Valley.

(074) Fife Keith-Strathisla-Mill of Towie Loop (Moray)

Route Summary
At just over 10 km, this is a fine half-day tour around the valley (“Strath”) of the River Isla near Keith. The walk takes in places of historical interest, and follows an old turnpike road for some of the route. There are good views of rolling farmland and surrounding hills.

(073) Crawton Bay-RSPB Fowlsheugh Circuit (Aberdeenshire)

Route Summary
This short cliff-top walk is nonetheless a special experience, especially in the late spring and summer seabird breeding season when 130,000 guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars and puffins return from a winter spent at sea to congregate on 60 m high cliffs.

(072) Ballater Bridges-Knock Castle Circuit (Aberdeenshire)

Route Summary
A little longer than our normal limit of 10 km, the overall ascent of 180 m is barely noticeable, making for an essentially gentle stroll in the scenic Dee Valley near Ballater. The diversion to Knock Castle is rewarded by great views and an interesting old story.

(071) Fyrish Monument Jubilee Walk (Highland)

Route Summary
A well-known walk that relentlessly climbs through pine woods, thinning out as you reach the massive Fyrish Monument, shaped to represent the gates on the old city wall of the Indian city of Negapatam during the late 18th C. There are wonderful views of the Cromarty Firth area.

(070) Glen Affric-Dog Falls-Coire Loch Circuit (Highland)

Route Summary
A fairly short walk in pine forest at beautiful Glen Affric. The 238m overall ascent on the route is compensated for by the scenic attractions of the fast-running River Affric, the peaceful Coire Loch, and the fabulous view westwards up the Glen from the highest point reached.
