Walk (156) Smirisary Village and White Beaches (Highland)
This is a memorable little coastal walk in a wildly beautiful landscape in the remote and rugged Moidart area of West Scotland. The walk takes in some stunning white shell-sand beaches of the type made famous by the film Local Hero. There are fine views of the islands of Muck and Eigg on a route which passes through the once deserted crofting village of Smirisary, occupying an idyllic pastoral setting under grassy cliffs … 😀

The high peaks of Ben Nevis and neighbouring Aonagh Mor have been mostly hidden since we arrived here last week. Today, as we walked at Gairlochy, they appeared in all their glory … 💙

Diving Duck Surprise …!
Visiting Neptune’s Staircase, the starting locks of the Caledonian Canal, this morning, I took this pic because of the boat name. Nova Spero, Nuevo Espero, New Hope. Only when I got back to our accommodation did I realise we had some mallard photo bombing going on … 😂💙

Steam Serendipity …!
We knew our route this afternoon took us past Glenfinnan Viaduct. We knew the viaduct, featured in the Harry Potter stories, was a popular tourist spot. We didn’t know the Hogwart’s Express would pass by just as we did … 💙😂

Steall Falls …
This morning, we headed out early to jump-start the leg muscles on a rocky path through a gorge at the head of Glen Nevis, taking us to an elevated meadow peppered with pale pink Spotted Orchids under the towering circle of Munro mountains known as the “Ring of Steall”. As we had expected, though, the main event was the 120m cascade known as Steall Falls, or “An Steall Bàn” in Gaelic, meaning “The White Spout” … 😀
